The Exceptional Edit/Mindset & Identity/The Get-Through-It Mentality Is Holding You Back

Saturday, April 26, 2025

Olevia Rachel

You’ve told yourself this before:

“I just need to get through this week.”

“I’ll rest after this project wraps.”

“Once the quarter ends, things will calm down.”

But they never do, do they?

Because the truth is— you’re not in a rough season. You’re stuck in a pattern.

And that get-through-it mentality that once kept you afloat? It’s now the very thing holding you back.

  • You’ve built your life around survival mode.

At first, it was temporary. One chaotic project. A tough boss. A demanding season.

So you powered through. Then you did it again. And again.

Now, survival isn’t a strategy. It’s your identity.

You’ve become the person who “handles it.” Who always pulls through. Who doesn’t crumble, even when everyone else is melting down.

But there’s a cost to carrying it all. And it’s usually you.

Because when survival becomes your default setting, there’s no energy left for dreaming. No space for building.
No room for anything beyond making it through.
  • You mistake endurance for alignment.

Let’s be real: You’re resilient. You know how to keep going even when you’re over it, overlooked, and running on fumes.

You always come through. But just because you can handle it doesn’t mean you should.

Your capacity is not your calling. Your endurance is not proof that you’re where you belong.

High pain tolerance doesn’t mean high alignment. In fact, it might mean you’ve stayed in a situation way past the point of growth.

You don’t need more endurance. You need a better environment.
  • You’ve normalized discomfort as a price for success.

You’ve been taught that if it’s not hard, it doesn’t count. That suffering builds character. That the struggle is part of the journey.

And while yes—grit matters—grind isn’t a personality trait. And burnout isn’t a badge of honor.

You’re allowed to crave joy. To want ease. To expect peace.

And no, that doesn’t make you weak. It makes you smart.

Because a well-rested mind solves problems better. A supported team moves faster. And a life that feels good creates energy you can use elsewhere.

Just because discomfort is familiar doesn’t mean it’s right. Stop calling it growth when it’s really just exhaustion with a shiny name.
  • Your “I’ll deal with it later” mindset is costing you now.

You tell yourself, “Once things calm down, I’ll reassess.” “I’ll update my resume later.” “I’ll think about what I want… eventually.”

But later never shows up. And while you wait for “someday,” your self-worth quietly erodes. But later never shows up. And while you wait for “someday,” your self-worth quietly erodes.

You forget how powerful you are. You dull your instincts. You accept situations you’d never recommend to someone else.

The longer you delay your shift, the harder it gets to believe you deserve one.

What You Might Be Believing (And Why It's Not the Whole Truth)

Let’s stop repeating inherited beliefs that normalize struggle. They don’t serve you anymore.

You Weren't Made to Cope—You Were Made to Change

Coping is necessary sometimes. But thriving requires something else: Awareness. Boundaries. Vision.

If you’ve been in “just get through it” mode for a while, it’s easy to forget that you have choices.

But you do.

You don’t have to burn your life down to build something better. You just have to stop believing that surviving is all you were built for.

So How Do You Break Out of Survival Mode?

A. Stop seeing exhaustion as a badge of honor.

Busy isn’t impressive. Running on empty isn’t a flex. And “I’m slammed” isn’t your only identity.

Start measuring your days not by how much you accomplished—but by how much you felt like yourself.

Make peace your new productivity metric.

B. Start acting like the version of you who's already free

What would she do differently?

Would she: Say yes to everything? Keep working through migraines? Check email at 11 p.m.?

Probably not.

So stop making choices from the mindset of the overworked you. Start thinking from the healed, clear, thriving you.

Let her lead your decisions now.

C. Make one aligned decision a day.

Rest when you’re tired. Speak up when you’re ready. Say no when it matters. Ask for what you actually want—not just what you think you can get.

Every decision is a vote for the life you say you want. Start casting those votes on purpose.

This Isn’t Weakness. It’s Wisdom.

You don’t need another motivational poster telling you to hustle.

You need a new belief system: One where your time is sacred. One where your peace is non-negotiable. One where your career grows with you—not in spite of you.

You were made for more than dragging yourself through Monday.

You Weren’t Made to Just Get Through It

You were made to lead. To build. To feel powerful in your day—not just proud you survived it.

The grind doesn’t get to define you anymore. You do.

Because resilience is not your only skill. Vision is, too.
